homeless

Posted in Technology on January 23, 2009 by hubricant

Being homeless seems a widely misunderstood state. More on that another time. For now though, I’d like to share an excellent technical solution for cold weather for “homeless” people.

There are a few things that I really like about this project: simplicity (adherence to basic design principles), affordable and carefully designed for a specific group of clients… have a look at the jacket for homeless people in cold places, that uses old newspapers.

I particularly like the fact that this product has been tested by someone who put himself in a walk-in refrigerator for an extended period. the video is on the site, after the intro flash.

The intersection of art and science is often wild and, well, difficult (if you don’t believe me then look up the controversy surrounding Hagen’s plastination exhibitions).

Nevertheless, here is someone who has skillfully navigated this intersection, creating something pricey but pretty, and intelligent.

There’s something strangely simple yet profound about this person’s video of himself. An illustration of first principles perhaps.  Thanks to makezine for the heads-up.

PETA hubris

This is about the most ridiculous, misguided, pathetic attempt to interest people in caring for animals. PETA once again illustrates why most intelligent people of the world regards them as raving lunatic vegetarians. In fact,  I challenge you to look at the site and try to figure out a) who its aimed at and b)what it hopes to achieve.

venomous mammals

Apparently there aren’t all that many of them. Here’s a new one. Its a fascinating thought though. I’d love to see its teeth.

And in other news, it seems that hunting from helicopters is a fiddly business in Siberia. Especially when the chopper crashes and one has to explain a number of corpses of endangered Argali sheep.

Steady as she goes

There’s something delightfully anti-consumer about undertaking complex hacks in one’s kitchen. Planning to take your high-def camera offroad? Why not build yourself a device for smooth panning from some bits ‘n pieces….
