energy implications of bottled water

Posted in Uncategorized on March 2, 2009 by hubricant

Some folks at the Pacific Institute have published an energy audit of 3 scenarios of bottled water commerce on the west coast of the US. Notwithstanding the locally relevant results, the results are thought-provoking. Bottled water, it seems, carries a much higher cost than tap water.

The open source article is published here.

Do have a look at the most recent wearable electronics undertaking: displays built into contact lenses… augmented reality is so close I can… touch it. Or can I really?

bad hair and high tech

One puzzlement is that we still carry clunky electronica around instead of wearing it. The materials and technology are there, but large-scale manufacturers aren’t pushing the envelope. There is some stuff out there but still gimmicky or high-end botique. Then again there are some brave souls out there who are prepared to don a wig and shoot themselves in the stomach in the name of fashion. Gizmag gives a good precis of where the industry is at.

Why Uncle Nick needs a swift kick up the exhaust

Dear UN Nairobi,

I was browsing some of your reccommendations for how to combat climate change, and deal with the truly desperate conditions under which many africans live. I was very impressed that you are trying so hard to save the poor starving africans from themselves. I know that its very hard for your western employees to endure the hardship of living in Nairobi on their meagre (almost volunteer) salaries. The selfless dedication of your employees to their work is just inspiring. I felt moved to tears when I saw how your top-level foreign employees from developed countries are living, while they carry out their good work. Such sacrifice.

But I digress. Please forgive me. The main purpose of this letter is in fact to draw your attention to a recent finding by an environmental research group. In a nutshell their research points toward a very real, as yet undocumented, looming environmental catastrophe.

While analysing the semantic content of environmental concerns expressed by major NGO’s they found a massive imbalance in the space-time continuum, which is resulting in vast quantities of this being produced:

Now as you are no doubt aware this by-product (“BadStuff” or BS for short) is usually harmless and produced by the humble male Bos taurus. However the research warns that the proliferation of recommendations by international NGO’s on how to save the planet and africa have led to an oversupply of this usually harmless by-product, BS.

The findings of the research are that many NGO’s working in Africa, like the UNEP should immediately switch to animal-powered transport, so as to try to balance the amount of BadStuff (BS) that is produced from the different sources. I do hope you find this inspiring. I know its unthinkable that you should stop producing BS in your wonderful reports, and that you have very important work to do on the streets of Nairobi in your UN cars

PS. well done on blocking the social justice site of that nasty man in Nairobi. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with hypocrisy and you should be proud of what you’ve managed to get away with.

Everything you need to know about Nauru

Posted in Uncategorized on February 16, 2009 by hubricant

And now, a return to an old favourite blog topic: nationalism. While researching the poorest countries in the world, using the Human Development Index, I found there are a few that are not listed. Nauru is one of them. I read the entire article and found it fascinating. An amalgamation of dogmatic burocracy and environmental destruction on a massive scale. And no-one pays any taxes.

workaround for stale biscuits

Posted in Uncategorized on November 30, 2008 by hubricant

I don’t have a toaster at home. So do not feel contrained by the conventional / prescribed uses of these things.

Today I found that stale biscuits can perch perfectly on top, bridging the gap where usually you would insert bread. Then the thing pops and the biscuits are marvellously warm and delectable once more. its important to turn them every now and then.

then once back in the office, one can place them on the spine of a notebook, so as to make use of it as a cooling rack, thereby avoiding the dreaded soggyness that comes with laying warm biscuits on a non-aerated surface…
